Wed 14 Oct 2015 - Nancy Young, VP Environmental Affairs for US airline trade association Airlines for America (A4A) has been appointed by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to his High-Level Advisory Group for Sustainable Transport. The Group, which represents all sectors and modes of transport, was established in 2014 with a three-year mandate tasked with making actionable policy recommendations on sustainable transport at all levels, while promoting the further integration of sustainable transport into development strategies and policies, including in climate action. Its aim is to promote sustainable transport that is in line with inclusive and equitable growth, social development, protection of the global environment and ecosystems, and addressing climate change. Read more ...

IAG appoints Counsell to head up sustainability programme across airline group
Wed 14 Oct 2015 - To further develop and enhance its environmental sustainability performance, International Airlines Group (IAG) has appointed Jonathon Counsell, former Head of Environment at British Airways, as Group Head of Sustainability. He will be responsible for the strategy and direction of the environment and sustainability programme across the Group, which includes Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia and Vueling. Counsell's focus will be on improving the carbon and noise performance of the four airlines. Dean Plumb will head the Environment function at British Airways. In September, Counsell was also appointed as the Vice-Chair of IATA's Environment Committee. Read more ...

Changes at Cathay Pacific as Watson moves to parent company and Chan to head Environmental Affairs
Thu 24 Sep 2015 - Mark Watson, Cathay Pacific's Head of Environmental Affairs for the past seven years, has moved to the airline's parent company, the Swire Group, to assume the role of global Head of Sustainable Development. In this expanded role, Watson assumes responsibility for overall group sustainability strategy and performance including those companies under Swire Pacific (including aviation, beverages, marine, trading & industrial and property divisions) as well as the group's private entities. He will report directly to Cathay Pacific and Swire Pacific Chairman, John Slosar. Within Cathay Pacific, the Environmental Affairs Department will now be headed up by Evelyn Chan, previously the airline's Environmental Projects Manager. She will assume responsibility for the delivery of the CX group's sustainable development strategy and targets, and will report to James Tong, Cathay Pacific’s Director of Corporate Affairs. Read more ...

Dr Fang Liu of China becomes the first-ever woman to be appointed Secretary General of ICAO
Wed 11 Mar 2015 - Dr Fang Liu of China has been elected by the ICAO Council as the new Secretary General of the UN civil aviation agency ICAO, so becoming the first-ever woman to hold the post. Her three-year term will start on August 1, succeeding Raymond Benjamin of France, who has held the position for two consecutive terms since 2009. Voted ahead of other candidates from Australia, India and the UAE, Dr Liu is only the second ICAO Secretary General from the Asia-Pacific region. Since 2007, she has served as Director of ICAO's Bureau of Administration and Services, and has chaired a number of important internal committees. Between 1987 and 2007, Dr Liu held the posts of Legal Counsel, Deputy Director, Director and Deputy Director General in the Department of International Affairs and Cooperation of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). Read more ...

Legal counsel insider appointed to head up IATA's environment and climate change work
Thu 7 Nov 2013 - IATA has announced the appointment of Michael Gill (right) as Director, Aviation Environment as of 1 November 2013. Gill will take on the role of leading, developing and implementing IATA's environment work, particularly in the areas of climate change and noise. He will also supervise work in biofuel commercialisation and the roll-out of the IENVA environmental assessment programme. Gill is a UK national and over the past six years has served as Senior Legal Counsel at IATA, handling IATA's external affairs portfolio, including management of the IATA Legal Committee. He has represented IATA at numerous ICAO and EU Commission meetings and has covered a wide range of issues including environment. Read more ...

Mon 15 Apr 2013 - As part of a wide-ranging restructuring of its divisions and management structure, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has promoted its Director of Aviation Environment, Paul Steele, to Senior Vice President, Member and External Relations (MER). The division will primarily take responsibility for IATA's advocacy activities. Steele is currently responsible for guiding the association’s environment strategy worldwide and is also Executive Director of the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), a cross-industry body that promotes sustainable aviation. Prior to joining IATA in December 2007, he served as Chief Operating Officer of WWF International, with previous senior management roles with the Virgin Trading Company, the Hilton Hotel Group and Pepsi Cola. Read more ...

Fri 2 Sept 2011 - Athar Husain Khan, previously General Manager responsible for policy, infrastructure and environment, has been appointed Deputy Secretary General of the Association of European Airlines (AEA). He will lead AEA's political team and oversee progress on key dossiers, including the imminent inclusion of airlines in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme and progress on the Single European Sky. Previous to joining AEA in February 2007, Husain Khan served as Director of Government & Industry Affairs at KLM. Prior to this, he worked for the Dutch government as Senior Policy Advisor for Aeropolitical Affairs and as an international traffic rights negotiator. Read more ...

Fri 2 Sept 2011 - The UK's Birmingham Airport has promoted its Environment Monitoring Officer, Kirstin Kane, as its new Environment Manager. Kane joined the airport in 2000 and has risen through the environmental team's ranks. She is tasked with ensuring the airport meets its environmental responsibilities and to work closely with local residents and play an active role in the community. "Having been at the airport for the last 11 years, I feel I can now bring all this experience to my new role," she says. Read more ...

Tue 11 Jan 2011 - Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) Head of Corporate Communications Juerg Dinner is to lead a new Public & Environmental Affairs unit. The airline is intensifying its activities on the environmental and political fronts, and the new arrangement is intended to provide them with a greater strategic importance and help provide parameters within which the national airline says it can continue to develop in response to demand. Wed 3 Feb 2010 - Tim Rees has become the new Environment Manager with the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO), which represents the interests of Air Navigation Services Providers (ANSPs) worldwide. Rees, a professional air traffic controller, is on secondment from Airservices Australia, where he has served for over 18 years. He replaces Adam Phelan, who has held the position since June 2008 and now returns to Airservices Australia's head office in Canberra. Read more ...

Mon 13 July 2009 - The Algal Biomass Organization (ABO) has appointed Mary Rosenthal as its first Executive Director. Founded one year ago, the ABO is a non-profit association that promotes the development of commercially viable transportation and power generation fuels as well as other non-energy applications for algal biomass. Much of the early impetus for the ABO came from Boeing Commercial Airplanes and counts a number of aviation-related companies among its members including Air New Zealand, Virgin Atlantic, Continental Airlines, FedEx Express, Honeywell UOP and Raytheon, as well as airline associations IATA and the ATA. Read more ...

Coppell has more than 18 years' experience in environmental affairs and joins Etihad from Cathay Pacific Airways where she held the position of Environmental Manager for the past five years.
