Tue 2 Sept 2014 - Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy David Danielson has announced the US Department of Energy is joining the Farm to Fly 2.0 initiative to support the development of a commercially viable aviation biofuel industry in the United States. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Boeing and airline trade body Airlines for America launched Farm to Fly in 2010 and the programme was extended for a further five years in April 2013 with additional partners including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI) and other aviation industry representative groups. The aim of Farm to Fly 2.0 is to set up supply chains in the US that are able to support a goal of producing one billion gallons of sustainable jet biofuel for use by airlines by 2018. Read more ...

Garuda Indonesia plans to start using locally-sourced aviation biofuel from 2016 as part of government target
Mon 1 Sept 2014 - As part of a national plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from air transport, state-owned airline Garuda Indonesia has confirmed it is targeting a two per cent use of biofuels in its jet fuel consumption from 2016 and three per cent from 2020. The airline burns around 1.8 billion litres of jet fuel annually, which is expected to rise to 2 billion in 2016 as a result of an increase in passenger traffic and additions to its aircraft fleet. However, Garuda's Director of Operations Capt Novianto Herupratomo said last week the commitment was heavily dependent on the availability of locally-sourced palm oil that is currently being laboratory tested. The Indonesian government unveiled its Green Aviation Initiatives for Sustainable Development last year, which includes targets for reducing emissions through a combination of fleet renewal, airport initiatives, air navigation improvements and the use of alternative fuels. Read more ...

Tue 12 Aug 2014 - Cathay Pacific Airways has made a strategic equity investment in Fulcrum BioEnergy, a California-based developer of a municipal solid waste (MSW) to sustainable jet fuel process. The Hong Kong airline has also negotiated a long-term supply agreement with Fulcrum for an initial 375 million US gallons of biojet fuel over 10 years, representing around 2 per cent of the airline's current annual fuel consumption. Fulcrum says it plans to commence construction of its first commercial plant later this year and to build large-scale jet fuel plants at multiple locations, including sites strategic to the Cathay Pacific network, primarily in North America. British Airways has already entered the MSW-to-biojet market in a similar partnership with Fulcrum rival Solena that aims to produce sustainable jet fuel from 2017 at a new plant east of London. Read more ...

Fri 8 Aug 2014 - An initiative by Boeing and South African Airways (SAA) to develop a renewable jet fuel sector in South Africa has announced it is to collaborate with SkyNRG on a project to produce jet biofuel from a new hybrid type of energy-rich, nicotine-free tobacco crop. The crop, known as Solaris, has been developed by Italian company Sunchem and test farming is already underway. SkyNRG has teamed with Sunchem to scale up production and both Boeing and SAA will provide active support in securing further project financing and offtake agreements. The partners believe biofuel production from large and small farms can be expected within the next few years, with oil from the plant's seeds being converted initially into jet fuel and then emerging technologies enabling future production from the rest of the plant. Boeing and SAA are working with the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) to help farmers with small plots of land to grow biofuel feedstocks that provide socio-economic value without harming food supplies, fresh water or land use. Read more ...

Tue 22 July 2014 - Dubai-based Petrixo Oil & Gas has selected Honeywell UOP's renewable jet fuel process technology to produce renewable jet fuel and renewable diesel at a new refinery to be built in the nearby UAE emirate of Fujairah. The technology is expected to be capable of processing around 500,000 tonnes of renewable feedstocks, although the source or type of feedstock to be used has not been revealed. Petrixo announced earlier this year that it will invest $800 million to build the new refinery, which will have a design capacity of one million tonnes, and claims it will be the first commercial-scale renewable jet production facility outside of North America. The biorefinery is to be built on a 460,000 square metre area of land within the Fujairah Free Zone and the Port of Fujairah and is expected to produce a variety of biofuel products for the Gulf and international markets. Read more ...

UK aviation group calls for government backing to kick-start production of sustainable aviation fuels
Fri 18 July 2014 - The potential to reduce UK aviation's annual carbon emissions by up to 1.7 million tonnes by 2030 through the uptake of sustainable aviation fuels can only be realised with government support, says UK industry environmental strategy group Sustainable Aviation (SA). It calls for a clear policy framework to stimulate investment and production of new generation alternative aviation fuels, which could provide up to £480 million ($820m) per year to the UK economy by 2030 and create 4,400 jobs if 12 new plants were to be built. Backed up by a parallel report from sustainable energy consultancy E4tech, SA has published a discussion paper, Fuelling the Future, outlining the potential market penetration both in the UK and globally for sustainable alternative fuels up to 2050. It is seeking views from policymakers and stakeholders ahead of a roadmap it intends publishing later in the year. Read more ...

Tue 15 July 2014 - Japan has become the latest country to launch a government-backed initiative to investigate the potential of developing a domestic sustainable aviation biofuel industry. Over 30 companies and organisations from the aerospace, fuel, engineering, finance and research sectors have formed a group called Initiatives for Next Generation Aviation Fuels (INAF) to plan a roadmap towards using nationally sourced aviation biofuels by 2020, when the Olympic and Paralympic Games are to be held in Tokyo. Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Nippon Cargo Airlines and Boeing are among the INAF members. Japan Airlines and Boeing partnered in one of the first demonstration biofuel flights back in January 2009, which was made up of camelina, jatropha and algae blended by Honeywell UOP and supplied by Nikki-Universal, a Japanese joint venture of UOP and JGC Corporation, both members of INAF. Read more ...

Fri 11 July 2014 - Less than a month after approval for commercial use by fuel certification body ASTM International, Brazilian carrier GOL has announced it is to begin flying with blended farnesane renewable jet fuel developed by the Amyris/Total partnership. The sugarcane-derived Synthetic Iso-Paraffin (SIP) fuel will be produced in Brazil and used in blends of up to 10 per cent on flights between Florida and Sao Paulo starting later this month. As the Brazilian fuel regulator has yet to transcribe the revised ASTM standard on SIP fuels, which may take a further three months, the Amyris/Total fuel blend can only be used on inbound GOL flights until passed. When produced on a fully sustainable basis, the two companies claim farnesane can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 per cent on a lifecycle basis compared to traditional petroleum fuels. Read more ...

Thu 26 Jun 2014 - Dutch sustainable jet fuel provider SkyNRG and aviation fuel supplier Statoil Aviation have announced Karlstad Airport as the location for their first BioPort in Sweden. The BioPort is expected to supply sustainable jet fuel to commercial flights departing from the airport in 2015 and is intended as a first step in developing a sustainable jet fuel platform in the region since the two fuel suppliers announced the formation of SkyNRG Nordic in March. To mark the installation at the airport of a fixed storage tank facility for sustainable aviation biofuel, the first regular commercial flights in Sweden to be made using aviation biofuel took place today. One flight was operated by bmi regional between Karlstad and Frankfurt, the other by Nextjet between Karlstad and Stockholm. Read more ...

Fri 20 Jun 2014 - A committee of fuel technical standards body ASTM International has approved for commercial aviation use a renewable jet fuel developed by French oil and energy giant Total and California-based industrial bioscience company Amyris. The drop-in fuel is derived from the conversion of plant sugars into a hydrocarbon molecule called farnesene, which is then hydrogenated into a farnesane product, and will be permitted in blends of up to 10 per cent with conventional jet kerosene. The two partners announced they will now market the fuel, which will initially be produced in Brazil, to airlines, with Brazilian carrier GOL likely as an early customer. The fuel is the first new technology pathway to be approved by ASTM since renewable jet fuels derived from plant oils and animal fats, known as HEFA fuels, were certified in blends of up to 50 per cent in June 2011. Read more ...

Fri 30 May 2014 - Support and cooperation from governments and the major oil companies is required to kick-start large-scale production of sustainable alternative aviation fuels, industry leaders told a Berlin conference last week. Such fuels are needed to reach industry emissions reduction targets and the European Flightpath 2050 goals, said Dr Jean Botti, Chief Technical Officer for Airbus. Dr Matthew Ganz, President of Boeing Germany and Northern Europe, said his company's goal of 1 per cent of total fuel consumption being made up from bio-derived sources by the end of 2015 was achievable but serious challenges remained at producing them at an affordable cost and ensuring the whole fuel cycle was sustainable. Botti and Lufthansa Executive Board Member Harry Hohmeister criticised the major oil companies for not doing more to engage and invest in alternative aviation fuels. Botti revealed Airbus was working on a long-term project to develop a hybrid electric regional passenger aircraft that could be in service by 2050. Read more ...

Fri 23 May 2014 - State and local initiatives in the United States, Australia, France, Germany, Brazil and other countries around the world are crucial to the successful deployment of sustainable alternative jet fuels, says Richard Altman, Executive Director Emeritus of the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI). These initiatives are beginning to produce significant results, he told a panel session held during this week's ILA Air Show in Berlin. The message of 'link globally, think locally' was key to building the breadth of biofuel activity needed by the aviation industry to reach its 2020 carbon-neutral growth goal, he said. With a host of new alternative fuel pathways and technologies awaiting certification, he argued it was critical that deployment be initiated in multiple geographic locations during the next few years to help meet the goal. Read more ...

Fri 23 May 2014 - A two-year study commissioned by Airbus, Virgin Australia and other partners has concluded the mallee tree could be the basis for a viable and sustainable jet biofuel sector in Western Australia. The report on the study published by the Future Farm Industries Cooperative Centre (CRC) says jet fuel produced from the tree would meet strict sustainability criteria determined by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB). The sustainability and life-cycle analysis carried out in the study covered the growing and harvesting of mallees and their conversion into aviation grade biofuel through the fast pyrolysis thermal and upgrading processes developed by Canadian company Dynamotive and France's IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN). The analysis shows the biofuel could emit 40 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional petroleum-based kerosene. Read more ...

Fri 16 May 2014 - KLM has started a series of 20 long-haul sustainable jet fuel flights from Amsterdam to the Caribbean islands of Aruba and Bonaire as part of the ITAKA initiative, which is aimed at speeding up the development and commercialisation of such fuels in Europe. The first flight in the series took off today en route to Aruba and marks the longest biofuel flight performed by an Airbus aircraft. The 10-hour flight is powered by a 20 per cent blend made of used cooking oil supplied by leading sustainable aviation biofuel provider SkyNRG, a partner in ITAKA. Funded by the European Union, the initiative is a collaborative project that aims to link supply and demand by establishing relationships among feedstock growers and producers, biofuel producers, distributors and airlines. Wed 14 May 2014 - Aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Embraer are to open a joint research centre in Brazil to help advance a sustainable aviation biofuels industry in the country. Under the initiative, the two companies will also fund and coordinate research with Brazilian universities and other institutions. Located in Sao Jose dos Campos Technology Park, the centre's research will focus on technologies that address gaps in a national sustainable aviation biofuel supply chain, such as feedstock production and processing technologies. Last year, the two airplane companies, along with the Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa of the state of Sao Paulo (FAPESP), completed an action plan, called Flightpath to Aviation Biofuels in Brazil, which identified gaps in the supply chain. Read more ...

Fri 9 May 2014 - Avianca Brasil and Lufthansa have respectively agreed partnerships with Byogy Renewables and Gevo to test, evaluate and support the approval of alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) renewable fuels for commercial aviation use. Jet biofuels certified so far by fuel standards body ASTM International are restricted to no higher than a 50 per cent blend with conventional jet kerosene but Byogy claims its proprietary ATJ process can produce a full replacement standalone fuel that does not require blending. Avianca will perform advanced flight testing to acquire test data and support an environmental impact study in the ASTM adoption process. Lufthansa will evaluate and test Gevo's renewable jet fuel derived from isobutanol under a project supported by the European Commission. Wed 7 May 2014 - A collaboration of European research organisations, academia and industry has claimed the first-ever production of synthesised 'solar' jet fuel, which they say is a major step towards truly sustainable fuels using virtually unlimited feedstocks. The SOLAR-JET project, launched in 2011 with funding from the EU 7th Framework Programme, has managed to demonstrate a process technology using concentrated sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water to a synthesis gas (syngas) - a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide - that can then be finally converted into jet kerosene by using commercial Fischer-Tropsch (FT) technology. Those involved in the project include Bauhaus Luftfahrt, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), ARTTIC and Shell, which claim the development of the pathway will put Europe in the forefront of research, innovation and production of sustainable fuels directly from concentrated solar energy. Read more ...

Wed 16 Apr 2014 - The British Airways and Solena project to convert landfill waste into jet fuel has received a major boost with the announcement of the location chosen for the facility. The site will be in the Thames Enterprise Park, a regeneration project just east of London on the estuary of the River Thames that includes a former oil refinery. Work on building the GreenSky facility is expected to start in 2015 and employ around 1,000 workers in the construction, which is due to be completed in 2017, and create up to 150 permanent jobs when operational. British Airways is providing construction capital and becoming a minority shareholder in the $500 million GreenSky project. The airline has committed to purchasing all the jet fuel produced by the plant, around 16 million gallons a year, for the next 11 years at market competitive prices, currently worth around $550 million. Read more ...

Mon 14 Apr 2014 - NASA has signed separate agreements with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) to conduct a series of joint flight tests to study the atmospheric effects of emissions from jet engines burning alternative fuels. The Alternative Fuel Effects on Contrails and Cruise Emissions (ACCESS II) flights are due to begin on May 7 from NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California. The programme will be the latest in a series of NASA ground and flight tests that began in 2009 to study emissions and contrails formation from new blends of renewable aviation fuels. ACCESS I tests showed that such blends may substantially reduce emissions of black carbon, sulphates and organics, says NASA. Fri 28 Mar 2014 - A newly-commissioned demonstration-scale facility in St Joseph, Missouri has started 24/7 operations that will see production of 4,200 gallons per day of renewable jet and diesel fuels from industrial and waste oils. The venture is a partnership of Applied Research Associates (ARA), Blue Sun Energy and Chevron Lummus Global (CLG), and uses a propriety process called Biofuels Isoconversion (BIC) to produce 100 per cent drop-in diesel and jet fuels. The partners claim the low-cost process can convert any non-edible fats and oils directly into high-density, aromatic cycloparaffin and isoparaffin hydrocarbons that are ideal for drop-in military and civilian jet fuels. ARA and CLG were amongst participants in a Canadian project in 2012 that included the first flight of a civilian aircraft using unblended renewable jet biofuel. Read more ...

Mon 24 Mar 2014 - Norway's state-owned airport operator and air navigation services provider Avinor has pledged to contribute up to 100 million Norwegian kroner ($16.5 million) over a ten-year period to help develop an aviation biofuel sector in the country. Announcing the move at an Avinor conference, 'Fly with Norwegian biofuel in 2020', the organisation's CEO said the advent of new and more energy-efficient aircraft would not be enough as the industry works towards carbon-neutral growth, and biofuels would have to be a key part of the solution. Petter Heyerdahl, Associate Professor at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), told the conference that biomass for producing biofuels should be reserved for the transport sector, in particular aviation, where there are few alternative options to fossil fuels. Read more ...

Fri 21 Mar 2014 - The early excitement of demonstration flights and subsequent approvals for the use of some types of biofuel blends on passenger flights has given way to the less headline-grabbing 'hard yards' of establishing supply chains to provide airlines with cost-competitive and sustainable fuels. New technology pathways are expected to be certified for commercial aviation use within the next year that will see innovative synthetic jet fuels reach the market. The recent disclosure that green diesel may become a blending source for jet fuel is another important step. The challenge now is to move beyond one-off projects towards a continuous supply of jet biofuels using standard fuel logistics at airports. Mon 10 Mar 2014 - Following their agreement last October to work together on a strategy to develop and implement a sustainable aviation biofuel sector in Southern Africa, Boeing and South African Airways (SAA) are extending the collaboration to include the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB). The three partners have announced an initiative to help smallhold farmers in the region grow crops to produce sustainable fuels. In December, Boeing and RSB held a three-day workshop in Kuala Lumpur with the aim of bringing together small farmers and local interests in Southeast Asia to educate and inform on sustainable feedstock practices. SAA has a target of having 50 per cent of its fuel uplifted at Johannesburg to be made up of sustainable jet fuel by 2023. Read more ...

Wed 19 Feb 2014 – The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has awarded a licence to the country's leading oil refiner Sinopec that permits use of its 'No. 1 Aviation Biofuel' in commercial operations. This is the first licence to be awarded and follows two years of testing by CAAC's Aircraft Airworthiness Certification Department. Last April, China Eastern Airlines carried out a test flight of an Airbus A320 from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport using conventional jet fuel blended with biofuel made up of palm oil and used cooking oil that had been developed, produced and refined by Sinopec. Awarding the Chinese Technical Standard Order Authorization (CTSOA), CAAC said the fuel met international fuel certification standards and the process had involved the participation of US and European regulatory authorities. It added the development of alternative clean energy was an important measure in promoting the sustainable development of civil aviation in the country and achieving emissions reduction targets. Read more ...

Mon 27 Jan 2014 - Airbus has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with five research and technology institutions to assess local opportunities for sustainable biomass production in Malaysia. The aim, says Airbus, is to determine the most suitable feedstocks to ensure any future jet fuel production is based only on sustainable solutions. According to the latest Global Market Forecast by Airbus, Asia-Pacific will lead in terms of world traffic by 2032. "Today's MoU is part of our engagement to support traffic growth whilst reducing aviation's footprint on the environment," said the aircraft manufacturer's New Energies Programme Manager, Frederic Eychenne. Seawater-fed desert plant an efficient source of sustainable aviation biofuel, find Abu Dhabi scientists
Thu 23 Jan 2014 - Research scientists in Abu Dhabi claim to have made a breakthrough in sustainable aviation biofuel development, finding desert plants fed by seawater can produce biofuel more efficiently than other well-known feedstocks. The work, funded by Boeing, Etihad Airways and Honeywell UOP, is being carried out by the Sustainable Bioenergy Research Consortium (SBRC), which is affiliated with the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. SBRC scientists will now test their findings in a pilot project that could support biofuel crop production in arid countries, such as the United Arab Emirates. Mon 20 Jan 2014 - A new initiative, BIOjet Abu Dhabi, has been launched to set up a sustainable aviation biofuel supply chain in the United Arab Emirates. The five partners collaborating in the venture - Etihad Airways, Boeing, Takreer, Total and the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology - will engage a broad range of stakeholders to develop a framework for the supply chain. The initiative will focus on research and development together with investments in feedstock production and refining capability in the UAE and globally. To mark the launch, Etihad undertook a 45-minute demonstration flight of a Boeing 777 with one engine powered by a locally-blended jet fuel made up of 10 per cent plant-derived biofuel supplied by Total/Amyris and conventional jet kerosene.  Read more ...

Tue 14 Jan 2014 - In what could be a significant breakthrough, Boeing has identified green diesel - a renewable ground transportation fuel - as a new source of sustainable aviation biofuel. Analysis by Boeing researchers has found that green diesel - not to be confused with biodiesel, which is a separate product and chemically different - has similar chemical properties to today's aviation biofuel. The company says the fuel emits at least 50 per cent less carbon dioxide than fossil fuel over its life-cycle and could be blended directly with traditional jet fuel. Mon 16 Dec 2013 - A workshop hosted by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) and supported by Boeing has been held in Kuala Lumpur to help small farmers in Southeast Asia grow feedstocks that produce sustainable fuels. The workshop is part of a programme launched by RSB, Boeing and other partners to understand and address the challenges for smallholder farmers in accessing markets for sustainable biofuels and biomaterials. A workshop was also held the previous week in Mexico as part of a similar initiative launched in Latin America, which is due to continue in 2014 with Boeing support. South Africa will also feature in plans for a workshop next year. Tue 10 Dec 2013 - An investigation into producing sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) on a commercial scale in Australia concludes that action to address the lack of local feedstock and infrastructure availability will be required to make them economically viable. The 105-page report released by Qantas and Shell was carried out with the support of the Australian government and is one of the most comprehensive studies yet undertaken into the setting up of a national SAF supply chain. It looks at natural oil-based production pathways, modelling a plant capable of producing 1.1 billion litres of renewable jet and diesel fuel per year, and also assesses opportunities around a waste-based pathway. The feasibility study also finds that extending biodiesel production grants to biojet fuel would go a long way to making a commercial plant viable. Read more ...

Mon 25 Nov 2013 - The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB), the preferred sustainability standard of major airlines for jet biofuels, has certified LanzaTech's joint venture facility in China, which is aiming to produce future supplies of sustainable fuels for its partner airline, Virgin Atlantic. LanzaTech's patented fermentation technology transforms CO or CO2 gases generated by the steel industry into bioethanol, which can then be converted into low-carbon jet fuels, and other platform chemicals. The facility is the first RSB-certified biofuel plant in China and the first anywhere in the world to receive certification for industrial carbon capture and utilisation. GOL has signed a memorandum of understanding with Boeing to work together on speeding up the research, development and approval of new sources of sustainable aviation biofuel in Brazil, and help advance the long-term development of an industry for such fuels. The airline plans to use sustainable biofuels on 200 flights during the World Cup, which will take place around the country during June and July. Mon 11 Nov 2013 - Aircraft engine manufacturer GE Aviation, which consumes more than 10 million gallons of jet fuel annually at its engine testing centres, has agreed to purchase cellulosic synthetic biofuel from D'Arcinoff Group (DG). The 10-year agreement calls for a baseline commitment of 500,000 gallons annually to be used at GE's main test facility in Peebles, Ohio, with options in place to order 10 million gallons per year. The fuel will be produced at a facility in Texas that is expected to be operational by 2016. The cost of the fuel will be comparable to traditional jet fuel, says GE. Depending on customer requirements, DG says it will be able to supply customers with three classes of ASTM D-7566 certified fuel - described as reduced, low and clear emissions jet fuel. Read more ...

The renewable fuel was made with natural oils from camelina, an inedible plant that grows, says Honeywell subsidiary UOP, in conditions where food crops cannot be grown. The company says that each gallon of its camelina-based Green Jet Fuel burned instead of petroleum reduces net CO2 equivalent emissions by 68 per cent. The two partners say the project is part of broader efforts to support environmental sustainability for the airline's operations and in addition to advancing South Africa's social and economic development. Particular feedstocks have yet to be identified but they must be sustainable and not compete with food crops, said Ian Cruickshank, SAA's Head of Group Environmental Affairs. Only waste streams from various crops and processes are currently being considered although numerous streams have been identified for further exploration. The public-private programme will be led by Washington State University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and will explore ways to meet the environmental goals that are part of the NextGen upgrade to the US air transportation system. Core partners include 14 other universities and the team will focus on goals for noise, air quality, climate change and energy, with areas of study to include new aircraft technologies as well as sustainable jet fuels. FAA Administrator Michael Huerta said the FAA's goal was to improve the energy efficiency of the National Airspace System by at least two per cent per year, with a target of one billion gallons of alternative jet fuel in use by 2018. Read more ...

The agreement follows a successful pilot in 2011-12 in which 45 vehicles were tested on a 100 per cent sustainable diesel derived from waste products. The sustainable diesel - not to be confused with biodiesel, stresses SkyNRG - is a co-product stream from a large sustainable jet fuel batch it 'fractionated' in Europe. By opting for a 30 per cent blend, the fuel meets the EN590 quality standard applying to diesel, which is required by engine manufacturers. SkyNRG says finding customers for its sustainable diesel will help to keep its biojet product affordable to airlines and is looking to other transport segments, such as marine and heavy trucking, where alternative sources of renewable power will be limited for the foreseeable future. Read more ...

Thu 25 July 2013 - Alaska Airlines has entered into an agreement to purchase sustainable jet fuel from Hawai'i BioEnergy, a consortium of three of Hawaii's largest landowners and three venture capital companies. Details of how much biofuel the airline is purchasing have not been revealed but it is hoping to begin using regular supplies in five years time. Alaska Airlines becomes the consortium's second customer, following a provisional agreement by Hawaiian Electric Co. to purchase 10 million gallons of fuel a year for power generation to the state. The locally grown feedstock for the jet biofuel is anticipated to be woody biomass-based and, assures the airline, will be consistent with sustainability criteria established by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels. Read more ...

Tue 23 July 2013 - Matching potential alternative aviation fuel producers and suppliers together with willing airline industry buyers was discussed at length during a conference ran in conjunction with the Alternative Aviation Fuels Pavilion at last month's Paris Air Show. To help producers understand the needs of prospective airline clients, the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI) released a guidance document at the event. Its aim is to communicate basic information and technical requirements, including a generalised process and key steps when entering into purchase agreements. It also advises producers on how to become involved with the aviation community, the testing and environmental evaluations required to show the fuel's suitability for aviation use, and how best to facilitate certification for a new fuel. Coordinating and facilitating cooperation between stakeholders has also become a key activity in the environmental efforts of ICAO, which participated in Paris. Read more ...

Mon 15 July 2013 - With its significant airline presence and agricultural resources, the American Midwest holds the promise of potentially contributing to advancements in the aviation biofuels industry, says the Midwest Aviation Sustainable Biofuels Initiative (MASBI) in its final report. Formed in May 2012, MASBI was led by Chicago-headquartered United Airlines and Boeing, along with Honeywell's UOP, the Clean Energy Trust and the Chicago Department of Aviation, and involved 40 or so organisations across the aviation biofuels supply chain. The Midwest region consumes nearly three billion gallons of jet fuel per year and MASBI estimates that for every five per cent of petroleum jet fuel that can be replaced by biofuels, around 3,600 jobs can be created and 700,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions saved.  Read more ...

Thu 6 June 2013 - United Airlines and AltAir Fuels have signed an agreement that will see flights operating out of the carrier's Los Angeles hub using sustainable jet biofuel from as early as next year. Under the deal, the airline has committed to purchasing 15 million gallons of jet biofuel over a three-year period at a price competitive, it says, with conventional jet kerosene. AltAir expects to begin delivering 5 million gallons starting 2014. AltAir will retrofit part of an existing petroleum refinery near Los Angeles to produce around 30 million gallons of renewable jet biofuel, biodiesel and other associated products. The commercial-scale biorefinery will use process technology licensed from Honeywell's UOP. The AltAir fuel is expected to achieve at least a 50 per cent reduction in GHG emissions on a lifecycle basis. Read more ...

Thu 23 May 2013 - China Eastern Airlines has conducted a first test flight of a biofuel blend sourced and produced in China. The airline carried out the 85-minute flight from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport using an Airbus A320 aircraft following a series of ground-based engine performance tests of the CAAC-certified fuel. The hybrid China Jet Biofuel-1 product, made up of used cooking oil and palm oil, was developed jointly by China Eastern, China Petroleum Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) and China Aviation Oil Holding Company, with Sinopec producing and supplying the blended fuel. The airline has also just taken delivery of its first A320 aircraft equipped with Sharklet fuel-saving wing-tip devices, becoming China's first carrier to do so. The research will focus on diverse raw materials such as municipal solid waste and agriculture and forestry waste, as well as a range of conversion processes available for biofuel production, to determine which advanced biofuels are the most sustainable for aviation. Tue 7 May 2013 – A report commissioned by Norwegian airport operator Avinor, along with airlines SAS and Norwegian, and the Federation of Norwegian Aviation Industries, concludes that cost-competitive, large-scale production of sustainable aviation biofuels could be viable in the country between 2020 and 2025. The assessment of land-based and marine feedstock in Norway shows that forest biomass is the most important feedstock on a near-term basis, with micro and macroalgae resources most probably not available in large volumes before 2025. The report, conducted by Ramboll, considers two processes most suitable within the timeframe for a Norwegian value chain: Fischer-Tropsch (FT) thermochemical processing and gasification of forest biomass, and the refining of bio-alcohols to Jet A-1 fuel (ATJ). Read more ...

Thu 21 March 2013 - Although the entry of airlines into the biofuel marketplace is a significant step in the right direction, the sustainability of this development is of critical importance, says the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The US environmental group argues that the aviation industry has a responsibility to use biofuels that are certified as sustainable because the sector's buying power has the potential to reshape the supply chain and avoid the use of poorly sourced biofuels that drive deforestation and food insecurity. To assess airlines' commitment to sustainability, the NRDC has just released its inaugural survey that provides analysis focused on airlines that have used, or say they are planning to use, biofuels in their operations. Despite the sector's pledge of support and recognition of the internationally recognised Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels (RSB) standard, NRDC concludes that airlines must now commit to applying RSB certification, or another equivalent standard, in their aviation biofuel sourcing. Read more ...

Mon 18 March 2013 - The Boeing 777-200 flight between New York JFK and Amsterdam Schiphol on March 8 not only marked the start of the first-ever series of regular biofuel-powered intercontinental flights but also an important milestone in KLM's aim of regular use of sustainable jet fuel blends at costs becoming increasingly comparable to the fossil fuel equivalent. The airline will run weekly flights every Thursday until August using a blend made up of 20 per cent used cooking oil derived fuel from Dynamics Fuel and supplied by SkyNRG, a company it set up in 2009. Other partners in the flight series include Schiphol Group, Delta Air Lines and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The flights make up a programme called 'Optimal Flight' that will continue through 2013 and includes research and testing in cooperation with Boeing of air traffic management procedures. Read more ...

The project, titled the Alternative Fuel Effects on Contrails and Cruise Emissions - or ACCESS for short, also aims to provide a greater understanding about contrails formation in general, to allow for a better assessment of the potential environmental benefits of aviation biofuels. It builds on NASA's past research into alternative aviation fuels that focused on ground-based emissions tests on fuels from a variety of sources. Wed 6 March 2013 - The aviation industry regards market-based measures (MBMs) as a temporary fix in achieving the carbon-neutral growth (CNG) goal from 2020 onwards until the benefits of new technology and operational advances, together with the uptake of sustainable biofuels, are realised. However, a new study by Prof David Lee of Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) concludes that CNG through to 2050 cannot be achieved without MBMs such as emissions trading playing a permanent role. The study attempts to quantify the likely mitigation effects of future technology, operational gains and the impact of biofuels against a backdrop of a fast-growing aviation sector. Lee says the study can help inform the current ICAO negotiations, which are moving into an important phase with the next meeting of government officials making up the High-level Group on International Aviation and Climate Change (HGCC) taking place March 25-27. Read more ...

However, California-based alternative energy crop company SG Biofuels (SGB) says it is developing advanced new hybrid versions that will enable the production of large volumes of sustainable plant oil and biomass at significantly lower costs. SGB has now signed agreements with two large Brazilian concerns that will see further development of the new-generation jatropha hybrids and lead to future production of sustainable biojet and biodiesel fuels in the country. The company has already deployed three research centres in Brazil, known as JMax Knowledge Centers, one of which is a multi-stakeholder initiative involving Airbus, JETBIO, Air BP, TAM Airlines, Bioventures Brasil and the Inter-American Development Bank. Read more ...

Fri 11 Jan 2013 - A Qatar Airways Airbus A340-600 flight from Doha to London on Wednesday marked the introduction of commercial-scale synthetic blended jet fuel produced in Qatar. Supplies of the natural gas-to-liquid (GTL) jet fuel, which is blended 50/50 with conventional Jet-A1, are being produced by the Pearl GTL plant, a venture involving Qatar Petroleum and Shell. The GTL fuel will initially be restricted for use by Qatar Airways but it is likely to be supplied to other airlines serving Doha International Airport at some stage in the future. The Fischer-Tropsch Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene (FT-SPK) blend was approved for commercial use in 2009 and there are expectations that up to one million tonnes of the fuel can be produced annually by Pearl GTL. GTL fuel does not provide reductions in lifecycle CO2 emissions but is cleaner burning with almost zero sulphur and lower particulate emissions compared with its petroleum-based equivalent. Read more ...

Tue 8 Jan 2013 - Analysis of the industry-first 100 per cent biofuel-powered flight carried out on a civil jet aircraft last October has produced some interesting findings. The flight was conducted by the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) using its Falcon 20 test aircraft with both engines using unblended ReadiJet aviation fuel produced from the sustainable oilseed crop Brassica carinata. The Falcon was trailed in flight by a second aircraft, a T-33, to capture and measure engine emissions produced from the fuel. NRC experts have revealed that compared with conventional kerosene fuel, there was a reduction of 50 per cent in aerosol emissions and an improvement of 1.5 per cent in specific fuel consumption during steady state operations. Additional static engine ground tests also showed a significant reduction of up to 25 per cent in particles and up to 49 per cent in black carbon emissions compared to the fossil fuel equivalent. Read more ...

Barclays has been appointed as advisor to explore the optimal funding through export credit agencies and the consortium providing the facility's key technology functions has also been announced. The five aircraft used Honeywell Green Jet Fuel sourced from oils from camelina, an inedible plant grown in the US northwest where it is rotated with wheat. It was blended 50/50 with conventional fuel and produced using Honeywell's UOP Renewable Jet Fuel process. Based on life-cycle analysis studies, Honeywell claims its camelina-based fuel burns 68 per cent fewer CO2 emissions than petroleum-based jet fuel. Depending on the feedstock, the fuel can offer between a 65 and 85 per cent reduction in GHG emissions. Gulfstream says the use of biofuels is part of a multipronged approach it is taking towards sustainability and improving aircraft efficiencies. Read more ...

The FAA anticipates the COE will attract interest from organisations such as the airline industry, other industrial groups, airport authorities and other governmental entities to solve what it describes as various unique and difficult aviation problems related to environment and energy. The Resonance brand industrial oilseed non-food crop is ideally suited for production in semi-arid regions such as the Canadian southern Prairies, says Agrisoma. More than 40 commercial growers in Western Canada were contracted this year to grow over 6,000 acres (2,400ha) of the crop that will be used to create the fuel for the engine performance and emissions flight testing. Airbus said it was supporting the standards process in China with the technical expertise gained from its experience with EU and US fuels standards bodies and also would help in the selection of sustainable feedstocks. Following laboratory research it has been carrying out since 2009, Sinopec announced in March that it had successfully produced 70 tonnes of its jet biofuel over the previous three months at its Hangzhou refinery near Shanghai, made from a variety of animal fat and vegetable oils using Sinopec's hydrogenation technology, catalyst system and production procedures. It will provide Lufthansa with drop-in, certified jet fuel for prospective use on commercial flights. Solena says an announcement on progress concerning its proposed London project with British Airways is imminent. According to Boeing, finding ways to convert discarded used cooking oil (UCO), called 'gutter oil' in China, could enhance regional biofuel supplies and improve affordability. The Boeing project is the first to be undertaken by the recently opened energy conservation technology centre it has set up with Chinese aircraft manufacturer COMAC. The prime aim of the funding is to form one or more domestic value chains that will lead to the construction of a commercial-scale biorefinery capable of supplying 10 million gallons a year. Further $32 million complementary funding is also to be made available in earlier stage advanced biofuels research, including pilot and demonstration scale biorefineries. The announcements come as Congress moves to prevent the military from spending more on purchasing alternative fuels than fossil fuels. Wed 16 May 2012 - In a first for an Australian airline, Virgin Australia is to undertake an eight-week trial involving the use of a biodiesel blend derived from locally sourced tallow and used cooking oil in a baggage tug and a push-back vehicle at Brisbane Domestic Airport. Produced by Ecotech Biodiesel at a local facility in Queensland, the biofuel is blended 20/80 with conventional diesel. If the trial proves successful, the airline says it will roll out biodiesel to its ground service equipment fleet in Brisbane and other mainline airports, which it estimates could reduce carbon emissions by 300 tonnes per year. Read more ...

Fri 4 May 2012 - Honeywell's UOP has started what it describes as the world's first comprehensive test programme involving its Green Jet Fuel product and a new biofeedstock specifically designed for biofuel production. A series of test flights are being carried out in Canada in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and Ottawa-based Agrisoma Biosciences, which has produced a new non-food, industrial oilseed crop derived from Brassica carinata. The programme will also test blends of Honeywell Green Jet Fuel at higher ratios than the 50/50 level approved by fuel standards body ASTM last year for commercial use. Not only is it the first use of biofuels on Boeing's new mid-size, twin-engined aircraft capable of flying long-range routes but it is the first time a biofuel blend has been used on a transpacific flight. Boeing said the flight emitted an estimated 30 per cent less emissions of CO2 when compared to similarly-sized current commercial aircraft as a result of a 10 per cent blend of biofuel and an approximate 20 per cent saving from the technology and efficiency advancements offered by the Dreamliner. Read more ...

LAN Chile recently carried out South America's first second-generation jet biofuel flight between the Chilean cities of Santiago and Concepcion using SkyNRG's used cooking oil biofuel. Qantas Airways has reported it will operate Australia's first commercial flights powered by sustainable aviation fuel from SkyNRG on a return service between Sydney and Adelaide on April 13. Qantas said it has ended collaborations set up last year with US biofuel companies Solena and Solazyme. A highlight during the show will be a one-day high-level conference in which senior policy-makers and industry will discuss the prospects for biofuels in the aviation sector. CAAFI has been behind previous showcase events at the Farnborough Air Show in 2010 and the Paris Air Show in 2009 and 2011, which drew a number of US biofuel companies as exhibitors alongside the running of daily seminars. Without going into specific details the three rivals say they will seek collaborative opportunities to "speak in unity" to government, biofuel producers and key stakeholders. Airbus has also joined an Australian consortium that includes Virgin Australia, which is studying the production of sustainable jet biofuels from eucalyptus mallee trees through pyrolytic thermal conversion. Thu 1 March 2012 - Aviation fuel consumption in China is likely to double over the remainder of the decade from a current 20 million tonnes to more than 40 million tonnes by 2020, with aviation biofuels expected to make up more than a half of this increase, said Li Jian, Deputy Director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China. According to a report in China Daily, Li said the move to develop biofuels is prompted by the EU's new emissions trading scheme. Air China carried out the country's first biofuel demonstration flight last October using a jatropha blend supplied by the PetroChina unit of China National Petroleum. Rival Sinopec, China's biggest oil refiner, has started sending aviation biofuel it has developed from animal fat and vegetable oils to CAAC for testing, with a view to commercialisation. Read more ...

Wed 15 Feb 2012 - If production efficiency continues to improve, the cost of some biofuels - such as those based on hydro-treated non-food vegetable oils from jatropha and camelina, or from pyrolysis of cellulosic feedstocks - could become competitive with the cost of fossil-based jet fuel by 2018. This is the main finding of research carried out by Bloomberg New Energy Finance for its clients. On the other hand, fuels produced from woody feedstock through gasification and the Fischer Tropsch (F-T) process are unlikely to be economical until well into the next decade. The researchers suggest that subsidies or mandates will be required if governments wish to see a sizeable take-up of aviation biofuels before 2020 and airlines will have to compete with road transport for the limited availability of certified, low-cost supplies. Read more ...

A year ago, BioJet received a $1.2 billion facility from Equity Partners Fund, which is intended to help finance a $6 billion supply chain capital projects programme over the next 10 years that includes feedstock and refining projects, as well as investment and strategic acquisitions. BioJet CEO Mitch Hawkins said its relationship with CERT envisioned joint projects worth at least $1 billion over 10 years locating feedstock generation and refining operations to provide biofuels for airlines and ground transportation at key locations throughout the western United States. Read more ...

Mon 23 Jan 2012 - The six-month trial by Lufthansa using biofuel blends on the route between Hamburg and Frankfurt has ended with the first-ever scheduled commercial transatlantic biofuel flight on January 12. In all, 1,187 scheduled flights were carried out between July and December using an Airbus A321 with a 50-50 blend of regular fuel and biosynthetic kerosene in one engine. Total consumption of the biokerosene mix amounted to 1,556 tonnes, says the airline, and initial calculations suggest CO2 emissions were reduced by 1,471 tonnes as a result. Lufthansa also reports that thanks to the higher density of biofuel, fuel consumption is reduced by more than one per cent, with the added benefit of cleaner burning fuel due to a lack of sulphur and aromatic compounds. Read more ...

A special flight of a Boeing 777 from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport carried VIPs, representatives from companies involved in the project such as Boeing and Rolls-Royce, and around 100 students and teaching staff. The aircraft was powered in both engines by a 50/50 blend of used cooking oil sourced from the United States and conventional jet kerosene. Tomorrow, a scheduled passenger flight between Bangkok and Chiang Mai will use the same biofuel blend. With the approval of such fuels now in place and airlines using them in commercial operations, he said they had the potential to become a game-changer in cutting aviation's carbon footprint, but they were still expensive and supply was limited. "I am under no illusions that this will be an easy process," he added in a speech to the IATA Fuel Forum in Paris. "But there is no shortage of commitment from the industry." The transatlantic flight used a 30 per cent blend containing biofuel sourced from Mexican-grown jatropha but the regular commercial flights of a Boeing 737-700 are using a 15 per cent blend of Honeywell Green Jet Fuel sourced from camelina grown in the US northwest. The biofuel was blended by Mexico's airport operator and jet fuel supplier Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares (ASA). Mon 7 Nov 2011 - United Continental subsidiary Continental Airlines today operated the first US commercial flight to be powered by a sustainable biofuel blend. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft made the two-and-a-half flight 1403 from Houston to Chicago using a blend, believed to be 40/60, of algae-derived biofuel and conventional jet kerosene. Although commercial jet biofuel flights have already taken place in Europe, China and South America since certification in July, this is the first time algae has been used as the sole source of the biofuel, which is considered a major next generation advance on crop-based fuels. The algae oil was supplied by San Francisco-based Solazyme and was refined into jet fuel in Houston by Honeywell UOP's process technology. In another landmark, United announced it has signed a Letter of Intent with Solazyme to negotiate the purchase of 20 million gallons per year of the company’s Solajet fuel, with delivery slated for as early as 2014. Read more ...

PetroChina, along with Honeywell's UOP, sourced and refined the biofuel and was blended by China National Aviation Fuel. Air China and Boeing are working on plans for a trans-Pacific flight between China and the United States with biofuel sourced from both countries. Earlier in the year, Air China said the demo flight would help verify the feasibility, supply capacity and commercial potential of Chinese-produced biofuel that met ASTM fuel standards, and aims to build a platform for an industrial supply chain in the country. Initially, a detailed report will be developed to look into the opportunities and challenges of creating a cost-effective, bio-derived and sustainable jet fuel production and distribution industry in Brazil. A series of public workshops are scheduled for 2012, with a wide range of stakeholders and a strategic advisory board providing input to the study. A further plan is to create a sustainable aviation biofuels research centre in the country that will be jointly funded by FAPESP and industry. The Airbus A321 aircraft commercial flight was powered by a 50 per cent blend of biofuel, believed to be used cooking oil supplied by Dutch aviation biofuels company SkyNRG, in each engine - the maximum blend permitted. In addition, optimised air traffic management (ATM) procedures were employed, including a Continuous Descent Approach (CDA). Combining the use of biofuel and efficient ATM allowed the flight to claim CO2 emissions of just 54 grams per passenger-kilometre. Other members include manufacturers and organisations from areas of science and research. The assembly elected a Board, with EADS Deutschland's Siegfried Knecht as Chairman and Joachim Buse, Lufthansa's Vice President for Aviation Biofuel, as Deputy Chairman. Tue 11 Oct 2011 - Nearly four years after it carried out the industry's first jet biofuel flight, Virgin Atlantic is firmly back in the biofuel big time with the announcement of a partnership with New Zealand-based clean energy company LanzaTech. Describing LanzaTech's industrial waste gases to fuel technology as the most exciting of the biofuel breakthroughs so far, the airline's President, Sir Richard Branson, said a demonstration flight is planned in 12-18 months time and he hoped to begin using the new jet fuel on operations from India and China to London within three years. The technology essentially involves taking waste gases such as carbon monoxide from steel, aluminium and other industrial plants and converting them to ethanol. This is then converted into jet fuel using technology developed by partner Swedish BioFuels. Virgin's exact role in the venture has still to be determined but the airline will help facilitate the certification, sustainability criteria and commercial development of the product. Read more ...

The flight marks the start of regular daily flights using a dedicated aircraft as part of trials to quantify any differences in performance or fuel burn of the engine when compared with the non-biofuel engine. The inaugural flight was originally scheduled for the end of July but was postponed due to "unforeseen delays" in the fuel delivery. Flying from Madrid to Barcelona, an Iberia Airbus A320 burned around 2,800kg of a mixture of 75 per cent conventional Jet A-1 fuel and 25 per cent biofuel in both engines. The camelina was grown in the United States and supplied by Sustainable Oils. The fuel was then blended with conventional jet fuel by ASA in Mexico and evaluated and certified by Spanish energy giant Repsol. The flight was part of Spain's pioneering 'Green Flight' programme to advance the use of biofuels in aviation. This now brings the number of airlines to have joined the group to 23, which collectively represents around 15 per cent of total global aviation fuel demand. The grants from the US Department of Energy will help fund small-scale projects that employ innovative thermochemical processes to convert biomass into liquid and gaseous intermediates which can then be chemically converted into fuels and other products. A GE-powered Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, with a blend of 30 per cent biofuel sourced from jatropha and 70 per cent conventional jet kerosene, flew 250 passengers from Mexico City to Madrid. Around 20 tons of the jatropha curcas fuel was supplied by Mexico's largest airport operator and jet fuel provider Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA). Aircraft manufacturer Boeing was involved in the flight programme, which was also supported by Mexico's Ministry of Communications and Transport. The funding will come from the US Departments of Agriculture (USDA), Energy and Navy and is to be matched equally with finance from the private sector. Without mentioning environmental concerns, the USDA said the partnership aims to reduce US reliance on foreign oil and create jobs, while positioning American companies and farmers to be global leaders in advanced biofuels production. The United States spends over $300 billion on imported crude each year. To accelerate the production of bio-based jet and diesel fuel for military and commercial purposes, the Secretaries of the three agencies have developed a plan to jointly construct or retrofit several drop-in biofuel plants and refineries. Read more ...

The IDB, along with aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Embraer, is to fund a sustainability analysis of producing jet fuel from Brazilian sugarcane. The study will evaluate environmental and market conditions for the use of renewable jet fuel produced by synthetic biofuel technology company Amyris. It will be led by ICONE, an agricultural research think-tank in Brazil, and will be independently reviewed and advised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). In 2009, Embraer and Amyris announced a sustainable jet fuel initiative that aims to conduct a demonstration flight in 2012 of a GE-powered Embraer aircraft belonging to Brazilian airline Azul using biofuel derived from sugarcane. Read more ...

However, a number of major challenges need to be faced including feedstock availability and development, and how to overcome the economic barriers for investors. The study recommends that quota mandates should be considered and suggests that auction revenues from the EU ETS be used to kick-start the process. As a first step, a low minimum goal for European aviation biofuel introduction in 2020 - a 2 per cent market penetration is proposed - should be the basis for triggering a start-up of production.  Read more ...

Both engines of an Airbus A319 were fuelled with a mix of 50 per cent biofuel derived from used cooking oil and 50 per cent conventional jet fuel. The 1,500km journey between Amsterdam and Helsinki was the longest scheduled flight so far to use biofuel. Finnair plans to carry out a series of four such flights over the coming weeks. Save for camera-wielding media, the 50-minute flight from Hamburg to Frankfurt passed uneventfully for passengers taking the shuttle. Four daily flights between the two cities will now take place using the same Airbus A321 aircraft over the next six months as part of the airline's burnFAIR project to research the long-term effects of jet biofuels under normal operations. Around 1,600 tonnes of fuel has been supplied by Neste Oil, which is a 50/50 blend of sustainably-sourced biosynthetic kerosene mixed with conventional jet fuel at the Finnish renewable fuel company's Porvoo bio-refinery. The blend will be used to power one of the aircraft’s two engines. Certainly in the short term, Neste is likely to remain Europe's only supplier of commercial quantities of sustainable jet biofuel and says it is in discussions with other prospective airline customers. Read more ...

The biofuel will be blended 50/50 with conventional jet kerosene and will be used in both engines of an Airbus narrowbody aircraft. Initially, Finnair aims to fly at least three flights on the Amsterdam-Helsinki route, refuelling at Schiphol, where the fuel blend is stored. The consortium plans to use pyrolysis technology developed by Canadian company Dynamotive Energy Systems to process mallees, a species of eucalypt tree that can be grown sustainably in many parts of Australia. The consortium is currently finalising plans for a demonstration unit that will make biofuels for testing, certification and public trials. The unit is intended to be operational in 2012, followed by construction of a commercial-scale plant that could be operational as early as 2014, says the airline. Wayne County Airport Authority, operator of Detroit Metropolitan and Willow Run airports, is partnering with Michigan State University Extension on the first project of its kind in the US Midwest. The two airports have around 1,700 acres (688 hectares) that is potentially suitable for cropping. If successful, says WCAA Interim CEO Genelle Allen, the project could attract businesses to the vicinity of the airports that would produce alternative jet and biodiesel fuels for use in aircraft and ground vehicles, and so bring economic development to Southeast Michigan as well as protect land around the airports from further encroachment. Read more ...

The 50/50 blended fuel will be used for six months on eight of its 28 daily flights on the near-500 mile round trip, notching up 1,200 flights in all and saving a total of 1,500 tonnes of CO2, says the airline. Although Lufthansa has been pipped to the post by KLM as the first airline to use recently approved hydroprocessed fuels on a commercial flight, the German carrier is laying claim to being the first to use sustainable biofuels in regular service. Lufthansa has also said it will start a programme of replacing its cargo containers with new lightweight versions that are 15 per cent lighter. A newly issued ASTM D7566-11 spec allows a 50 per cent blending of fuels derived from hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) with conventional petroleum-based jet kerosene. Last week, KLM became the first airline to take advantage of the landmark certification by operating a scheduled flight between Amsterdam and Paris using a blend based on used cooking oil sourced from the United States. The ASTM subcommittee responsible for alternative jet fuel certification, which approved Fischer-Tropsch synthesis fuels two years ago, will now turn its attention to approving fuels derived from sugars, alcohols and some other synthetic technologies. The agreement involves seven airline members of the Air Transport Association (ATA) and its development was led by American Airlines and United Continental. The other ATA members to the agreement are Alaska Airlines, FedEx, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines and US Airways, along with associate member Air Canada and outsiders Frontier Airlines and Lufthansa. The scheduled flight of a Boeing 737-800 aircraft between Amsterdam and Paris carried 171 passengers and was seen off by the Dutch State Secretary of Infrastructure and the Environment, Joop Atsma. The biokerosene was a mix of used cooking oil supplied by SkyNRG and produced by US-based Dynamic Fuels, and conventional jet fuel. Oil-based biofuels were recently passed for commercial aviation use by members of fuel body ASTM International, although the approval and certification process has not yet been completed. New Zealand-based LanzaTech has developed a fermentation process that feeds off industrial flue gases to produce alcohols, such as ethanol, that can be thermochemically converted to aviation fuel. Another potential advantage of the process is that it has the potential to produce jet fuels that contain the necessary all-important aromatics and so circumvent the need for blending with conventional fossil-based kerosene. Instead of the mainly plant-based biofuel that Lufthansa will be using, KLM has sourced synthetic jet fuel from the United States made from used cooking oil. Tue 14 June 2011 - A major technical milestone has been reached in the introduction of renewable aviation biofuels as the main standards body responsible for certifying fuels has granted preliminary approval for their use in commercial operations after a ballot by a committee of industry, air force and regulatory stakeholders was unanimously passed. Final approval is expected at the beginning of July with technical specifications for bio-derived fuel then being added to the existing D7566 alternative fuel specification. Plans to start using biofuels in the prescribed 50 per cent blends have been stalled since a similar ballot six months ago unexpectedly threw up concerns over an engine test contamination issue, which have now been overcome. Tue 7 June 2011 - A study to determine the feasibility of the Australian and New Zealand aviation sector using sustainable biofuels to meet industry carbon reduction targets concludes that a bio-derived jet fuel industry could decrease aviation emissions by 17 per cent and generate more than 12,000 jobs by 2030. Commissioned by a range of aviation interests, the 'Flight Path to Sustainable Aviation' report does not make policy recommendations but is aimed at providing critical input to strategic policy and investment decision-making for both stakeholders and policy makers. It puts forward a roadmap scenario in which the aviation sectors of the two countries could achieve a five per cent biofuel share in their total fuel use by 2020, expanding that amount to 40 per cent by 2050. Launched in July 2010, the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Northwest (SAFN) initiative - largely driven by Boeing, Alaska Airlines, Washington State University and three of the region's largest airports - has identified potential pathways and actions needed to make aviation biofuels available to airline operators in the region. Tue 24 May 2011 - There's a race afoot to give wings to biofuels in the aviation industry as part of an effort to combat soaring fuel prices and cut greenhouse gas emissions. In 2008, Virgin Atlantic became the first commercial airline to fly a plane on a blend of biofuel and petroleum. Since then, a number of airlines around the world have flown biofuel test flights, and Lufthansa is racing to be the first carrier to run daily flights on a biofuel blend. However, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) say the industry may want to cool its jets and make sure it has examined biofuels' complete carbon footprint before making an all-out push, reports Jennifer Chu, MIT News Office. They say that when a biofuel's origins are factored in - for example, taking into account whether the fuel is made from palm oil grown in a clear-cut rainforest - conventional fossil fuels may sometimes be the greener choice. Read more ...

Fri 20 May 2011 - Global industrial crops technology company Quinvita is the latest to join a new biofuel alliance that has come together to produce sustainable jet biofuel from Brazilian-grown jatropha. The Brazilian Bio-Jetfuel Platform is a collaboration led by Curcas Diesel Brasil to form a jet biofuel value chain from 'field to wing' in the country. Quinvita will work with the platform's partners on the deployment of its proprietary knowledge in jatropha agronomy and processing, and will test its advanced jatropha cultivars in selected locations in Brazil. Curcas Diesel Brazil played a key role in sourcing jatropha feedstocks for a demonstration flight undertaken last November by TAM Airlines on an Airbus A320. Since then, TAM and Airbus have formed a separate alliance with a Curcas breakaway company called Jet Bio, and are targeting a supply of 80,000 tonnes of jatropha-based jet fuel in 2013. Read more ...

Tue 17 May 2011 - Reputed to be the birthplace of the bear cub that inspired AA Milne's book Winnie the Pooh, the township of White River in northwest Ontario is set to become the home of Canada's first major jet biofuel facility. The Ontario government has selected US renewable fuels company Rentech to receive waste biomass from its Crown forests for production of renewable jet fuel at the company's proposed Olympiad Project in White River. The project is being designed to produce around 85 million litres (23 million gallons) annually of renewable and certified low-carbon RenJet fuel, and is scheduled to be in service in 2015. In 2009, Rentech signed an offtake agreement with around 13 major airlines for future supplies of alternative aviation fuel. The company also supplied synthetic jet fuel for a validation flight carried out by United Airlines last year, and its technology is set to be utilised in the Solena/British Airways municipal waste-to-jet fuel plant in the UK. Read more ...

Fri 13 May 2011 - An investment of up to $70 billion will be required to meet aviation biofuel targets, and is needed now, said Mitch Hawkins, the CEO of BioJet International, a company that aims to become a leading global feedstock producer and supplier of renewable jet fuel. Speaking at this week's IATA Aviation Fuel Forum in Singapore, he noted the industry had set a target of 6 per cent of jet fuel coming from sustainable biofuels by 2020 but because of the lead times involved, he said the multi-billion investment would have to start flowing immediately to achieve the goal. The EU recently set out its ambitions for biofuels to make up 40 per cent of the overall aviation mix by 2050. Meanwhile, the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), the industry umbrella organisation, has since clarified its position on aviation biofuel targets, saying they had not been set. Read more ...

To be installed near Terminal 4, the facility will have an initial budget of 600,000 euros ($860,000) and is due to become operational next month. The overall project will involve research and experimentation as well as improving technologies for sequestering carbon dioxide and the cultivation of microalgae. The purpose is to reduce the production costs of biomass and to achieve profitable biofuel production. Thu 7 Apr 2011 - Jatropha can deliver strong environmental and socio-economic benefits for Latin America, and can provide greenhouse gas reductions of up to 60 per cent when compared to petroleum-based jet fuel if the right farming and land use conditions are met. These are the findings of a Boeing-funded study conducted by Yale University's School of Environmental Studies. The Yale team studied jatropha curcas projects in Brazil and conducted extensive interviews with jatropha farmers and used field measurements to develop the first comprehensive sustainability analysis of actual ventures, compared to previous theoretical studies. Prior land use issues and the quality of crop yields produced widely varying sustainability results relative to conventional jet fuel. One engine of a CFM-powered Airbus A320 will use a 27 per cent blend of biofuel made from jatropha sourced from Chiapas and produced by Honeywell's UOP, and 73% of conventional Jet A-1. Also actively involved with the project is state-owned Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA), which is leading Mexico's plans for one per cent of jet fuel consumption to be met from sustainable biofuels by 2015. In a keynote speech, KLM Managing Director Jan Ernst de Groot said biofuels were vital to reducing aviation CO2 but reducing the cost of production towards equivalence with fossil-based kerosene was key, although government help could reduce the parity timeframe. He told delegates that airlines would never compromise on sustainability and they could not afford to use the wrong type of feedstocks that did not meet strict criteria. Tue 22 Mar 2011 - Airbus and Romanian airline TAROM have launched a biofuel project that they hope may lead to commercial-scale production of sustainable jet biofuel derived from the camelina plant. A high-energy oilseed crop, camelina has been grown in Romania for thousands of years and tests in the United States have shown it to be a promising feedstock for jet biofuel. Feasibility studies will be carried out by a consortium of key stakeholders on a range of different seed varieties and harvesting methods, with Airbus acting as the catalyst in setting up a Romanian 'value chain' towards production. Paul Nash, Head of New Energies at Airbus, is optimistic enough fuel can be sourced for demonstration flights to take place by TAROM before the end of the year. Airbus will be involved in ensuring sustainability criteria is met and Nash believes the fuel will achieve a minimum 50 per cent reduction in life-cycle GHG emissions compared to conventional jet kerosene. Read more ...

The sides note that as the world's two largest biofuels producers, the development of aviation biofuels "constitutes an important instrument for the mitigation of climate change and for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions". Goals for the partnership include coordinating efforts towards the establishment of common standards and specifications for aviation biofuels, strengthening private sector partnerships and preventing international barriers to biofuels trade and development. He said a business-as-usual increase in aviation emissions of 150 per cent by 2050 over 1990 levels was unsustainable. The conference was held to outline the results of the major two-year feasibility and impact assessment SWAFEA study initiated by the Commission on alternative aviation fuels. The project is to be sited in Ensenada, Baja California, situated on the north-west Pacific coast of Mexico and considered an ideal environment for algae growth with abundant sunlight and access to seawater. Mexico has ambitions as a major producer of transport biofuels, not just to satisfy its own domestic needs but also at the huge US market across the border. Mon 14 Feb 2011 - The approval of Bio-SPK jet fuels for use in commercial aircraft operations is not now expected until the middle of the year at earliest and could possibly be delayed until the end of 2011, says the FAA representative on the ASTM International committee responsible for certifying the fuels. Approval had been expected by now but concerns were raised during an ASTM meeting in December, said to be made by an engine manufacturer, which will require further testing to be carried out. The delay has angered Lufthansa, Europe's biggest airline, which planned this spring to become the first airline to introduce biofuel blended jet fuel on regular commercial passenger flights. A first shipment of jatropha jet biofuel was ready for delivery to Hamburg from Neste Oil's Porvoo facility in Finland, said the airline. Read more ...

BioJet says it has operations throughout the entire biofuel value chain, including feedstock generation, technology, refining, logistics, sustainability certification and distribution. The company, formerly JatrophaBioJet, is a collaboration of Abundant Biofuels Corporation, South Polar Carbon Asset Management and Mitch Hawkins and Company. Thu 3 Feb 2010 - Finnair has pulled out of plans to introduce jet biofuels on commercial flights. The airline hoped to be amongst the first early adopters following an approval for the use of Bio-SPK fuels expected within the next few months. It says there were issues concerning the sustainability and cost of the fuel, along with supply chain challenges, which was to be produced and supplied by fellow Finnish company Neste Oil. Last week, Neste Oil received a "shame award" from Greenpeace although Finnair deny this influenced its decision. Neste is one of the world's largest users of 'certified' palm oil, which it uses in its NExBTL renewable diesel. Lufthansa says it will continue with preparations to use NExBTL jet fuel on flights between Frankfurt and Hamburg this spring. Meanwhile, Finnair has just relaunched its corporate responsibility web pages to project its image as an ethical and environmentally conscious airline. Read more ...

Solena is currently in the process of raising finance and identifying a potential site in London following an offtake agreement signed a year ago with British Airways. Unconfirmed reports suggest Solena is also in discussions with various airlines about the possibility of a similar plant in Dublin. Under the Solena model, its proposed facility aims to convert around 500,000 tonnes of MSW into 16 million gallons of jet fuel and nine million gallons of bionaphtha per year. Read more ...

In addition to Boeing, Air China will collaborate on the project with PetroChina, Honeywell's UOP, Pratt & Whitney and other partners. Wed 12 Jan 2011 - Legislation has been proposed to establish a Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) forest biomass pilot project that would create jet fuel from wood waste and mill residue. The announcement was made by Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark at the Pacific West Biomass Conference in Seattle. The bill would also convene a stakeholder group to develop a strategy for moving a sustainable biofuel industry forward, says DNR. The initiative comes after a six-month project to assess the potential of a sustainable aviation fuels industry in the Pacific Northwest was started in July 2010 by local aviation interests and other stakeholders. Three airports - Seattle-Tacoma, Spokane International and Portland International - along with Alaska Airlines and Seattle-based Boeing funded a four-state regional assessment to look at biomass options and possible sources for creating renewable jet fuel. Read more ...

Wed 5 Jan 2011 - US-based Solena Group, which is seeking to build and operate a facility in London to convert waste biomass feedstock into sustainable jet fuel, has signed a letter of intent with Qantas to develop a business plan over the next 12 months with a view to building a similar production plant in Australia. The London project, called GreenSky, is due to open in 2014 and will produce around 16 million gallons of jet fuel and nine million gallons of bionaphtha a year when fully operational. Although no details have been released by either side, it is likely Qantas would undertake a long-term offtake agreement to purchase all the jet biofuel produced by the proposed facility, as British Airways has committed to in respect of the London operation. A UK newspaper reports that Solena is also exploring the possibility of partnering with a number of airlines on a similar venture in Dublin, Ireland. Read more ...

According to Finnair and Neste, the two parties have been looking at areas of cooperation for over two years and are still ongoing. In parallel, Airbus and AirBP - the jet fuel distribution unit of BP - are providing support to the project, with Airbus also sponsoring sustainability studies. The plant is expected to start operations in 2013 with an initial processing capacity of 80,000 tonnes (around 26.4 million US gallons) of jet biofuel per year. The 50 percent blend made from Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil will be used on one engine of an IAE-powered Airbus A321 aircraft on flights between Hamburg and Frankfurt. The flights will initially continue for a period of six months as part of a project to study the long-term impact of sustainable biofuels on aircraft performance, with Airbus providing technical assistance and fuel properties monitoring. The fuel will come from sustainable feedstock sources and is being provided under a long-term agreement with Finland-based Neste Oil. Previous Airbus alternative fuel flights have been powered by gas-to-liquid (GTL) blends. Fuel for the TAM A320 flight was a 50 percent blend of locally-sourced Brazilian jatropha-based bio-kerosene and conventional aviation kerosene that had been processed by Honeywell's UOP. Just one of the two CFM56 engines was powered using the biofuel. Airbus estimates that sustainable biofuels could supply some 30 percent of commercial aviation as early as 2030. In May, 10 Brazilian organizations, including TAM and three other airlines, formed the Brazilian Alliance for Aviation Biofuels to promote biofuel initiatives in the country. Read more ...

Domestic production of renewable energy, including biofuels, is a national imperative, said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who announced the venture along with with other initiatives to spur rural revitalization. The USDA and FAA will bring together their experience in "research, policy analysis and air transportation sector dynamics" to assess the availability of different kinds of feedstocks that could be processed by bio-refineries to produce jet fuels. Tue 21 Sept 2010 - Airbus and British Airways are to take part in a project set up by the UK's Cranfield University to explore how algae can be harvested in ocean-based facilities to produce jet fuel in commercial quantities. A consortium called the Sustainable Use of Renewable Fuels (SURF) has been set by the three parties, along with Rolls-Royce, Finnair, London Gatwick Airport and IATA, to serve as an advisory and steering group to Cranfield's Sea Green project. The university already has a pilot facility on campus that is growing and processing algae for biofuels but the eventual aim is for Sea Green to set up sustainable salt-water facilities, producing the first commercial quantities of biomass for biofuels within three years. Read more ...

Mon 2 Aug 2010 - Boeing, Airbus and IATA lined up at the recent Farnborough Air Show to proclaim rapid progress in the development of alternative sustainable jet fuels but warned of the challenges ahead in bringing them to commercial scale. Producers and end users came together during the show to put on a series of briefing sessions on biofuel developments. "Stunning is the only word I can use to describe how much progress has been made in the last three years," said Paul Steele, IATA's Director of Aviation Environment and head of the industry coalition Air Transport Action Group. "We have seen a huge amount of activity in driving this forward. Certification has been the prime focus to begin with because safety is a key issue. TGC, Bombardier Aerospace and Porter are joined on the programme by engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney Canada, Sustainable Oils and Honeywell’s UOP. Thu 27 May 2010 - The first-ever study into a comparison of the life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of a range of alternative aviation fuels has been published by the Partnership for AiR Transportation Noise and Emissions Reduction (PARTNER), based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The work uses consistent methodologies to facilitate equitable comparisons, with a range of life-cycle GHG emissions provided for each feedstock. Importantly, it provides an examination of emissions from land use change, a current issue of concern. The range of drop-in fuels studied cover Fischer-Tropsch fuels as well Hydrotreated Renewable Jet fuels such as from jatropha, although camelina, which has already been used on test flights, will be analyzed only in a future study. The RSB has been hit by the recent resignations of two top biofuel trade organizations, the European Bioethanol Fuel Association (eBIO) and the European Biodiesel Board. Thu 20 May 2010 - Following a recent meeting in Sao Paulo, ten organizations have agreed to form the Brazilian Alliance for Aviation Biofuels (ABRABA). They include four airlines - Azul Brazilian Airlines, GOL, TAM and TRIP - as well as aircraft manufacturer Embraer and the Brazilian Aerospace Industry Association (AIAB). Representing the biofuels industry are producers and developers of biomass sources such as jatropha, sugarcane and algae. The alliance follows an announcement by TAM that the airline will carry out Latin America's first commercial aircraft biofuel flight during the second half of 2010 using a 50/50 blend of jatropha and conventional jet fuel. This will be Latin America's first commercial aircraft biofuel flight and the jatropha has already been sourced from family agricultural projects and large farms in various parts of Brazil. A recent report projects that one billion gallons of camelina biofuel could be available to the aviation and biodiesel sectors by 2025. Mon 22 Mar 2010 - Aircraft and engine manufacturers have reported that after successful air and ground fit-for-purpose testing, jet biofuels blended 50/50 with conventional jet kerosene are likely to be certified for commercial airline use before the end of 2010, or early next year at the latest. A key ASTM research report compiled by Boeing, UOP and the US Air Force was sent earlier this month to the FAA, Airbus and engine manufacturers for review and comment. The report marks a final stage in the ASTM D4054 certification process before reaching the ASTM ballot and review procedure and the final fuel specification. Tue 16 Feb 2010 - Although not commercially viable yet, the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) offers a strong financial, as well as environmental, incentive for the adoption of jet biofuels, says a new report by EQ2. Based on industry assumptions of 15 percent and 30 percent consumption of biofuels in 2020 and 2030 respectively, they could contribute to potential savings for airlines involved in the EU ETS of $2.01 billion in 2020 and $5.84 billion in 2030 on the purchase of carbon credits. Based on the current EU ETS carbon price for 2012 of 15 euros and the 2009 average jet fuel price of $1.69 per gallon, every gallon of jet fuel burned would incur carbon costs of an additional $0.21, equivalent to a premium of 12.4 percent. Read more ...

Mon 15 Feb 2010 - British Airways is set to become the first major European airline to use commercial-scale sustainable jet biofuel in its daily operations. In partnership with Washington, DC-based Solena Group, the airline anticipates using 16 million US gallons of biofuels produced annually from a new plant to be sited in east London. The $280 million self-contained plant, which is due to open in 2014, will convert 500,000 tonnes of waste per year when fully operational into enough jet fuel to meet BA's entire needs, and more, at London City Airport. Under the Letter of Intent, Solena will construct the plant and BA has agreed to take the entire output. BA CEO Willie Walsh said the partnership would help the airline realize its goal of reducing net carbon emissions by 50 percent by 2050.  Read more ...

As microalgae are much more efficient than plants at converting solar energy and carbon dioxide into fixed biomass, there is significant interest across multiple sectors in their long-term potential as an energy source. Airbus Senior Vice President Public Affairs & Communication Rainer Ohler said the two rival aircraft manufacturers needed to work together on developing green strategies and there was no other option but to use aviation biofuels if the industry's climate change targets were to be met. Ohler was speaking at an event to commemorate the first visit of the Airbus A380 superjumbo to Geneva Airport. Mon 18 Jan 2010 - A major study to investigate the technical and financial feasibility of a biorefinery plant to supply Stockholm's Arlanda Airport with 50,000 tonnes of jet biofuel per year has been completed. The project was initiated and part-financed by LFV, which operates Sweden's airports and air navigation service, and has substantial carbon reduction targets to meet. LFV claims the biorefinery would make the airport truly carbon neutral. With the added production of other hydrocarbons and district heating, this could reduce total CO2 emissions at the airport by 150,000 tonnes per year with a 10 percent blend of jet biofuels. The biomass for the facility would come from forestry chips and other wood residues. The report says the prospects were "very promising, showing high efficiency and competitive production costs." Read more ...
