AEA’s environment manager promoted as new Deputy Secretary General and will head up political team

Fri 2 Sept 2011 – Athar Husain Khan, previously General Manager responsible for policy, infrastructure and environment, has been appointed Deputy Secretary General of the Association of European Airlines (AEA). He will lead AEA’s political team and oversee progress on key dossiers, including the imminent inclusion of airlines in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme and progress on the Single European Sky. Previous to joining AEA in February 2007, Husain Khan served as Director of Government & Industry Affairs at KLM. Prior to this, he worked for the Dutch government as Senior Policy Advisor for Aeropolitical Affairs and as an international traffic rights negotiator.

A Dutch national, Husain Khan spent his early years in the Middle East where he was educated in English and Arabic. He has a law degree from the University of Leiden, where he specialised in International, European and Air and Space law.

“AEA’s overriding objective for 2011 and beyond is to strengthen the competitiveness of European airlines,” he says. “An international level playing field is crucial to deliver the full economic benefits of aviation and I look forward to driving this agenda in my new role.”

The AEA represents 36 leading European network carriers.
