Wed 2 July 2008 – The Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) has announced the appointment of Daniel Elwell as Vice President of Civil Aviation. Elwell is currently Assistant Administrator for Aviation Policy, Planning and Environment at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). At the FAA, Elwell was responsible for aviation policy and strategy on environment and energy issues. He joins the AIA on July 7.

AIA President and CEO Marion Blakey, herself a former FAA Administrator, said Elwell’s experience in aviation will bring significant expertise to the association. “Dan is extremely knowledgeable about our business. His experience in government, both at the FAA and on Capitol Hill, his international expertise, in addition to his background in the airline business, will be a major asset as AIA moves forward with the many issues on our plate.”

An announcement on his departure or who will replace him has yet to be made by the FAA. Elwell, who has been with the FAA for less than two years, also served as the US representative on the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Group on International Aviation and Climate Change (GIACC). Following the first meeting of the Group in February, a second meeting is due to take place on July 14-16 in Montreal. It is understood that Elwell’s deputy at the FAA, Nancy LoBue, will replace him.

Elwell, who has become a respected voice on US aviation environmental policy issues, is a former Managing Director of International and Government Affairs with American Airlines as well as a captain with aeronautical ratings in DC-10, MD-80 and B767 aircraft. He also saw active duty as a pilot with the US Air Force.

The AIA represents US civil, military and business aerospace manufacturers and suppliers. It also coordinates with GIACC through the ICCAIA (International Coordinating Committee of Aerospace Industries Associations).
