Japan's ANA claims to be the first airline to set its own CO2 emissions targets

Fri 23 May 2008 – In its Ecology Plan 2008-2011, ANA has set out goals for the reduction of CO2 emissions by its fleet. Compared to 2006, the airline plans a 4% reduction on domestic routes and 10% on international flights by the end of 2011. ANA will also run its ‘e-flight’ programme to bring the environment into focus on domestic flights.
Specifically, ANA aims to reduce the amount of CO2 produced on domestic routes by 200,000 tonnes, compared with 2006 levels, down from 4.9 million tonnes to 4.7 million tonnes. The 10% reduction in CO2 emissions per tonne per kilometre on international flights equates to a fall of 25% against 1990 levels – the Kyoto Protocol yardstick.
“We have just moved into the four-year period from 2008-2011 outlined in the Kyoto Protocol for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions,” said Mineo Yamamoto, ANA President and CEO. “The environment is one of the most pressing issues facing the airline industry today, and at ANA we are committed to take a leading role. To this end, we are forging ahead with the renewal of our fleet with the most environmentally-friendly aircraft available. We are engaged in reforestation and coral-growing projects, we run a picture book competition to raise awareness of the environment and have now become the first airline in the world to set its own emission targets.”
From June 1 to July 10, ANA will run its ‘e-flight’ programme for the third time on all its domestic flights. Along with cups and chopsticks made from sustainable sources, an inflight video featuring Welsh-born novelist and naturalist CW Nicholl – a familiar figure in Japan – will be shown. A total of 20 Boeing 777-200 and -300 aircraft in the airline’s domestic fleet will also carry the ‘e-flight’ logo.
